SPECIATION
For many years it was sufficient to only monitor total levels of toxic trace elements such as mercury, arsenic and selenium.
However, in the last decade it has become increasingly important to monitor levels of individual species as the toxicity of certain elements depends very heavily on their physico-chemical form.
This is particularly true of mercury and arsenic, where organomercury compounds may be up to 1000 times more toxic than inorganic forms and organoarsenic compounds are relatively non-toxic.
